In 1969, Ginny Richardson was heartbroken when Lucy, her infant daughter born with Down Syndrome, was taken from her. Ab, Ginny’s husband and Lucy’s father, sent his baby girl away from their home in Dover, Massachusetts to Willowridge, a special school for the “feeble-minded,” under pressure from his powerful family. Ab convinced Ginny it was for the best, both socially and for Lucy. He told his wife they should grieve for their daughter as if she were dead, and then move on.

Two years later, Ginny’s best friend, Marsha, shows her a series of articles that expose Willowridge as hell-on-earth for those who live there. When she hears of the squalid hallways filled with neglected children, including her Lucy, Ginny knows she has to get her daughter out.

With her six-year old son in tow, Ginny and Marsha drive to the school to see Lucy and the conditions at Willowridge for themselves. What they find confirms their suspicions, which sets their course on a heart-pounding journey south—a journey that turns Ginny into a fugitive.

Ginny must test her own strength and face the world head-on as she fights Ab and his domineering father for the right to keep her daughter. Racing from their home in Massachusetts, Ginny travels through the beaches of Atlantic City, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and finds herself in a roadside mermaid show in Florida.
