On Saturday, April 23rd Warwick’s will host La Jolla’s first annual Saint Jordi’s Day festival from 10am to 4pm. Saint Jordi’s Day is a day of books, roses, and romance and Warwick’s is bringing it to La Jolla all the way from Barcelona.

Our celebration will feature special book tables hosted by our outstanding Penguin Random House representatives, roses from Adelaide’s, live music from renowned classical guitarist Fred Benedetti, Spanish food from Paella Valencia, a dragon and knight costumed characters, two childrens’ story times, and raffle prizes. Saint Jordi is the Catalan name of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia.

As legend has it, Saint George slew a dragon to save a princess and then plucked a red rose for the princess from a rose bush which sprouted from the exact spot that the dragon’s red blood had spilled. To commemorate Saint Jordi’s day men and women in Barcelona take to the streets to buy and exchange books and roses for their sweetheart. More books are sold on this day in Barcelona than the entire rest of the year combined.

Ten percent of all sales will benefit the libraries of La Jolla Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, and Bird Rock Elementary.
