On Wednesday, November 11th at 4:00pm PST Warwick's will host Barney "Scout" Mann as he discusses his new book, Journeys North: the Pacific Crest Trail, in conversation with co-host of the public-radio show A Way with Words, Martha Barnette. Barney Scout Mann is one of the rare individuals who have hiked America’s Triple Crown of Trails: the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails. His connections to the PCT run deep, as each spring for the past fifteen years he and his wife Sandy have hosted hikers starting out on the PCT (more than 7,000 to date) at their San Diego home. Mann has served as board chair of The Pacific Crest Trail Association and is currently president of the Partnership for the National Trails System. Mann’s writing on trails has been featured in a variety of publications, including Backpacker, the Portland Oregonian, and the New York Times online, and has been recognized with a Lowell Thomas Journalism Award. He is the co-author with Mark Larabee of The Pacific Crest Trail: Exploring America’s Wilderness Trail (foreword by Cheryl Strayed) and is the author of The Continental Divide Trail.

This compelling story of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail told by legendary trail angel and thruhiker Barney Scout Mann is part action thriller, part armchair adventure, and 100% endorsement for hitting one of the most fascinating trails on earth. Mann’s account provides a ringside seat for the challenges, the agony, and the pure joy of long-distance hiking. We witness the drama and the intimacy between long-distance hikers as we travel side-by-side with Scout (Barney’s trail name), his wife Sandy (“Frodo”) and four others as they hike more than 2,500 miles from Mexico to Canada.

2007 was a year of extreme weather conditions in which only a third of the hikers who started the trail actually finished. Along the way, the Manns formed relationships with two other couples and their lives on the trail quickly became intertwined. What unfolds as they head north is captured in this gripping tale of the challenges posed by a once-in-a-generation drought, severe winter storms, helicopter rescues, illnesses and shattered bones, but even more of the bonds that form between people under the toughest of circumstances. Through these characters Mann reveals in captivating language the universality of our humanity, our aspirations, and the wonder of survival.

Martha Barnette is co-host of the public-radio show A Way with Words, heard each week by listeners in 40 states across North America, and worldwide by podcast. The show’s about words and how we use them — word and phrase origins, slang, regional dialects, writing well, books and reading, and that weird thing Grandma used to say. Martha holds an undergraduate degree in English from Vassar College, and did graduate work in classical languages at the University of Kentucky. She studied Spanish in Costa Rica at the ILISA Language Institute. Before her work in radio, Martha was a reporter for the Washington Post and an editorial writer for the Louisville Courier-Journal. She’s the author of three books on word origins: A Garden of Words, Ladyfingers & Nun’s Tummies: A Lighthearted Look at How Foods Got Their Names, and Dog Days & Dandelions.
