On Thursday, December 3rd at 4:00pm PST Warwick's will host Michael Aaron Gardiner as he discusses his new cookbook, Modern Kosher: Global Flavors, New Traditions. Michael Aaron Gardiner is an award-winning weekly food writer (2018 San Diego Press Club Award; 2019 Society of Professional Journalists Award) for the San Diego CityBeat and contributor to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He writes the San Diego Food and Travel blog and cohosts The Art of Spooning podcast on the Specialty Produce Network. Gardiner also practices business law and litigation in San Diego.

Kosher cuisine is an evolution, not a finite, codified menu. Kosher cooks apply the laws of kashrut to the best available ingredients and flavors, whatever the style and wherever the place. That’s how most classic kosher recipes were originally created, and it is how new recipes can be, should be, and are created every day. That application—part devotional, part practical, always creative and resourceful, always grounded in doing the best you can with what you have—is what contemporary kosher cuisine is all about, and award-winning food writer Michael Aaron Gardiner deliciously demonstrates this in Modern Kosher.

This dynamic, inspiring cookbook is divided into three parts: large and small plates of culturally Jewish recipes from Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and contemporary Israeli traditions; global recipes from Asia, India, Latin and European countries, and the Middle East; and “The Pantry,” which includes essential sauces, stocks, pickles, spice blends, garnishes, and  flourishes. The book also includes a delicious variety of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free fare. Enjoy such new takes on classics, like Tomato Matzo Ball Soup with Pickled Garlic Chives, Herbed Falafel with Beet Hummus, and Coffee Braised Lamb Shoulder in Pita. Or, bring new favorites to the table with Smoked Chicken Hush Puppies with Rémoulade and Gremolata; Lasagnette of Mushrooms, House-made Ricotta, and Mint-Pepita Pesto; Penne “Carbonara” with Sweet Peas and Oven-Dried Tomatoes, and Oil-Poached Tuna with Chettinad Curry and Coriander Chutney. All of this, plus the ultimate recipes for Schmaltzand Gribenes! (If you know, you know, and if you don’t you will want to!) Whether planning a holiday feast or weeknight dinner, Modern Kosher presents a bright, elevated vision of everyday kosher cooking.
