Saving Wildlife: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Dr. Kurt Bernirschke

Physician scientist. Wildlife conservationist. Visionary leader. Family man. The inimitable Dr. Kurt Benirschke ("Dr. B") was a trailblazer - passionate about gathering and sharing knowledge to make the world a better place for both humans and wildlife.

This heartfelt and engaging memoir, written by Dr. B's son Rolf Benirschke, describes his fascinating life and many adventures.

With vivid detail, it captures Dr. Benirschke's accomplishments, from his early years as a young doctor learning English in a new country to his world-changing role as the founder of the San Diego Zoo's research division, which established the wildlife conservation movement in zoos as we know it today.

About the author: As a zoology major at UC Davis, Rolf Benirschke had a passion for wildlife and worked during his summers at the San Diego Zoo’s Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, the conservation division founded by his father, Dr. Kurt Benirschke. Following his graduation, Rolf became an NFL placekicker. His career was nearly derailed during his third season by a life-threatening battle with ulcerative colitis that required two emergency surgeries six days apart. After a miraculous comeback, Rolf returned to play seven more seasons with the San Diego Chargers, earning numerous honors, including Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, NFL Comeback Player of the Year, and All-Pro. He played in the Pro Bowl and became the 20th player inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame. During his time in the NFL, Rolf also launched Kicks for Critters, a fundraising and awareness program to support the Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts.
